Reaching Out to LGBTQ Tibetans

LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual) Tibetans have always existed throughout our history. It just seems that our community hasn’t fully come around to see the vastness of LGBTQIA+ Tibetan identities and the obvious lack of representation and awareness discourages many from being open about their lived experience. That is not to say a lot of Tibetans in exile have not rapidly come around to let people exist without judgment. However, there is still a lot of prejudice that give rise to discrimination and the marginalization of LGBTQIA+ Tibetans.

It is hopeful hearing about individuals who have been embraced by their immediate family and community after sharing their truths. Still, there is a lot to be done to make sure that everyone can fully live their lives. Bringing awareness to issues faced by LGBTQIA+ Tibetans through shared stories might go a long way in moving hearts and minds.

This project exists on various social media platforms to share lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Tibetans’ stories, concerns and perspectives. It is also a collaborative space for and by LGBTQIA+ Tibetans to build community.

If you’re an LGBTQIA+ Tibetan interested in joining the project, or just want to submit your stories or suggestions, you can reach out via email: tibetanequalityproject@gmail.com
